IQOS and ZYN maker Philip Morris Limited (PML) has appointed Claire Jolly as senior director of corporate affairs for the UK and Ireland as the company prepares for major regulatory changes across both markets.

The role will cover government and regulatory affairs, communications, scientific engagement and illicit trade prevention, with the business highlighting the importance of navigating the incoming Tobacco and Vapes Act and Ireland’s upcoming presidency of the European Union.

Jolly joins PML, the affiliate of Philip Morris International (PMI) in the UK and Ireland, from advisory firm Beaufort Strategy. Prior to that, she spent more than 16 years at global hedge fund Elliott, where she served as director of European government affairs and advised on a range of international investments across multiple sectors.

Her previous experience also includes leadership positions at the Alternative Investment Management Association and the Managed Funds Association, alongside earlier political roles in the UK Parliament and on Capitol Hill in the US.

PML said the appointment comes as the business continues to expand its portfolio of smoke-free products in the UK and Ireland amid tightening regulation of tobacco and vaping products.

Claire Jolly said there was a “once in a generation opportunity” to accelerate the move away from cigarettes while tackling illicit trade and underage sales.

“I am delighted to be joining a Fortune 500 company that has invested in the research, science, technology and innovation needed to realise this vision and a talented global team determined to deliver on our shared ambitions,” she said.

Peter Nixon, managing director at PML, said Jolly’s experience would help the company continue engaging with policymakers as the regulatory landscape evolves.

“As we embark on a new regulatory environment, Claire’s skills, knowledge and energy are vital to ensuring we can continue to advocate for policies that are workable for adults who use nicotine products,” he said.

“We have a real chance to shift consumers away from cigarettes once and for all, and I am so pleased that we have Claire on board as part of the leadership team helping to deliver this vision.”
