A YouGov study, which was commissioned by ASH, has found that out of an estimated 2.9m UK vapers more than half had given up smoking.

The study showed 1.5m had stubbed out their fags for good, compared to 1.3m who continued to smoke tobacco products.

Vapers have quadrupled since 2012 when ASH recorded numbers to be around 700,000.

Despite Public Health England’s independent review finding vaping around 95% safer than smoking, the study also discovered that many vapers over-estimated the harm of e-cigarettes – with only 13 per cent of respondents recognising that e-cigarettes are a lot less harmful than smoking.

More than a quarter (26%) thought e-cigarettes were more or equally harmful to tobacco.
