Public Health Wales has launched a new bilingual mobile app designed to help smokers quit, offering personalised digital support alongside existing stop-smoking services.
The Help Me Quit (HMQ) app provides free support in both Welsh and English and is intended to complement traditional NHS stop-smoking programmes.
Officials say the app offers an accessible option for smokers who may prefer digital support or who are reluctant to use conventional cessation services.
The launch coincides with No Smoking Day on 11 March, a national campaign encouraging smokers to take steps towards quitting.
Users of the app can set a quit date, log smoking habits and track progress over time. The platform also includes behavioural support tools, motivational content and videos designed to help users manage cravings and triggers.
Additional features include a calculator that estimates money saved and health improvements after quitting.
The app also connects users with specialist Help Me Quit services if they require further support from trained advisors.
Smoking remains the leading cause of preventable death among adults over 35 in Wales. Public Health Wales estimates it contributes to around 3,845 deaths annually in this age group and more than 17,000 hospital admissions.
Chris Emmerson, consultant in public health at Public Health Wales, said many smokers attempt to quit without support.
“The Help Me Quit app brings evidence-based behavioural support directly into people’s hands – whenever and wherever they need it,” he said.
Jim McManus, executive director of health and wellbeing at Public Health Wales, said the app provides a simple starting point for anyone considering quitting.
“Whether someone wants to quit today, next week or is just exploring their options, the app guides them every step of the way. If users need extra help, the app makes it easy to connect directly with our dedicated stop smoking advisors,” McManus said.
He added that the digital service will continue to evolve using user feedback and new evidence.
